Granite Support Tips And Brackets Guide

How To Support Granite With Hidden Brackets

As a granite support guide, in designs where your countertop spans supports, the length of the span (side to side as your facing it) should be limited to 24″ for ¾” (2CM) thick stone and 36″ for 1¼” (3 CM) stone thicknesses.

For designs where your countertop is cantilevered or overhangs the supports, overhanging portion should be limited 16″ to 24″.

Granite support requirements: Fragile stones may require corbels and supports that are spaced closer together and that do not allow as much overhang than the specifications here.

Use granite countertop brackets when overhanging stone counters.  Considering that granite, marble, and limestone can have overhangs weighing hundreds of pounds, and considering how brittle granite countertops can be, granite support brackets are imperative. Quartz countertops often do not need support.

Granite supports can be either functional, decorative, or both depending on your

granite countertop installation.  And unlike laminate countertops that do not require supports, natural stone countertops require some thought and understanding of why and how they will be used.  It’s best to let an expert such as your granite fabricator determine the need.  See Original Granite Bracket for expert assistance on hidden countertop support.

What size granite countertop support brackets will you need?

The size of your granite support legs and brackets will be based on your overhang .  For example, if your granite overhangs 12 inches past your 2 x 4 knee wall, subtract 2-4” for the desired length of your support bracket.  In this case, an 8” or 10” deep bracket is called for.

How to add support brackets to existing countertops

You can use front mounting brackets to add support for countertops that are already installed, creating an open, floating countertop effect. If you’re dealing with sheet-rock over studs on a knee wall, you can do the following:

* Remove the sheet-rock over the stud where the bracket will be mounted.

* Mount the bracket to the stud and ensure that the top of the bracket is level with the underside of the granite. The horizontal plate of the bracket should be level.  If necessary, shim the bracket between the vertical plate and the stud, not on the horizontal plate.

* After installing the bracket, use a “Quick Patch” sheet-rock kit to cover the bracket.
